Greetings,

I hope that you and your students are off to a great start for the 2007-2008 school year.  I would like to invite you to the October meeting of the Seneca Reading Council for our first of three enjoyable and informative gatherings this year.

On Wednesday, October 17th, Dr. Timothy Rasinski will be our featured speaker.  Dr. Rasinski is a professor of literacy education at Kent State University . He has written over 150 articles and has authored, co-authored or edited over 15 books or curriculum programs on reading education. He is co-author of the award winning fluency program called Fluency First, published by the Wright Group. His scholarly interests include reading fluency and word study, reading in the elementary and middle grades, and readers who struggle. His research on reading has been cited by the National Reading Panel and has been published in journals such as Reading Research Quarterly, The Reading Teacher, Reading Psychology, and the Journal of Educational Research.

Tim recently served a three year term on the Board of Directors of the International Reading Association and from 1992 to 1999 he was co-editor of The Reading Teacher, the world's most widely read journal of literacy education. He currently serves as co-editor of the Journal of Literacy Research. He is also a past-president of the College Reading Association and he has won the A. B. Herr Award from the College Reading Association for his scholarly contributions to literacy education.

Prior to coming to Kent State Tim taught literacy education at the University of Georgia . He taught for several years as an elementary and middle school classroom and Title I teacher in rural Nebraska .

I hope you’ll be able to join us on October 17th.

And later this school year…Dave Crawley will join us for our January 24, 2008 meeting.  Dave is well-known as a television reporter for KDKA in Pittsburgh , where he has won dozens of awards, including eight Emmys.  He has published dozens of zany poems in books and children's magazines. He makes frequent appearances at area schools, reading his rhymes to poets of the future. Dave’s assemblies feature lively readings, and his classroom and library programs encourage students to write their own rhyming poetry. Using examples from his own poetry, Dave demonstrates the use of poetic devices, and students are encouraged to contribute ideas for an offbeat poem Dave will create right on the spot.

And then, on the evening of April 22nd, Caroline Reeder will be our guest.  Holding undergraduate and graduate degrees from American University , she taught 4th, 5th and 6th grades, and more recently she taught reading to primary grade children.  Caroline will offer a view of literacy through the eyes of a teacher and through the eyes of a writer…

Please plan on joining us for the Seneca Reading Council Meetings this year.  Bring a friend.  In addition to the informative and enjoyable programs, there’ll be lots of opportunities to meet new friends, reconnect with people you may not have seen for awhile, and to share ideas with colleagues from other schools..

I’m looking forward to seeing all of you.

 Sincerely,

Brian Maguire, President, Seneca Reading Council
